Hatched Ensemble

Dance Umbrella and the Barbican present South African choreographer Mamela Nyamza's groundbreaking work.

Four performers stand on stage with their backs to the camera. They are topless and wearing ankle-length white tulle skirts with wooden clothes pegs pegged all over the skirts. On their heads they wear red tulle headdresses and they are standing en pointe, wearing pale pink ballet pumps.

This urgent and subtly spectacular work challenges gender norms, juxtaposing references to Western classical dance and music with South African vocals.

Nyamza has won many accolades for her activism-focused dance creations and here her work is jointly presented by Dance Umbrella, London's international dance festival and the Barbican, one of the UK's most high profile performance spaces.

Hatched Ensemble was programmed through a visit by Dance Umbrella's Artistic Director and CEO, Freddie Opoku-Addaie, to the Kinani Festival in Mozambique, which was supported by the British Council. We're delighted to partner the production's London tour, as part of our work supporting UK-international connections between innovative artists and organisations.

Join us for a post-show talk on 10 October.
