Earlier this year, we supported London venue Bold Tendencies to host the first UK performance by The Mediterranean Youth Orchestra, also known as Orchestre des Jeunes de la Méditerranée.
Bold Tendencies is a not-for-profit arts organisation based in the rooftop spaces at Peckham Multi-Storey Car Park in South London.
The Mediterranean Youth Orchestra consists of 100 talented young musicians, selected through auditions conducted in twenty cities across the Mediterranean basin. Based in France, the orchestra has partnered with the UK’s London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) to support connections between musicians from across 17 countries across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.
Their arrival in the UK followed a three-week residency in Aix-en-Provence, during which they received coaching from the renowned players of the LSO and rehearsed original new work composed by Belgian composer, jazz-saxophonist and aulochrome pioneer Fabrizio Cassol.
The resulting collaboration drew on diverse musical traditions and multinational roots in recognition, celebration and understanding of music bridging cultural differences.
During their visit to London, the musicians took part in creative learning initiatives with Peckham's local community, including public open-access rehearsals and artist Q&A sessions.
