What's Behind the Music?
To say that the music industry is big would be an understatement. In the UK alone, music exports in 2023 made a record £7.6 billion, in terms of Gross Value Added (GVA) to the economy, and the industry employed 216,000 people. More than half the population of the UK are active music streamers and there are over 130 billion streams of music each year. Plus, the majority of people in the UK say they listen to music more than they watch movies (77%), exercise (62%), socialise with friends and family (58%) or read (56%).
The industry shows no signs of slowing down, but how music is made, shared and consumed continues to evolve. There are fresh challenges but also fresh opportunities for anyone working in the industry today, or hoping to make their mark in the future.
Selector Behind the Music brings you insights from international experts on the current landscape for showcasing music, and explores the biggest issues affecting the industry today—from AI and the battle for gender equality to the symbiotic relationship between music and the media, and the rise in mental health issues amongst artists and music makers.
