Between April 2018 and April 2020, French organisation Ciné-ma différence commissioned a comparative survey of 16 organisations delivering Relaxed-style Performances in France, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Sweden, and Switzerland.
This report presents the findings of the survey, including a chronology and mapping. It describes and illustrates transferable good practice, and suggests recommendations for organisations implementing Relaxed Performances—defined in this report as those which provide a welcoming environment that lets all patrons express themselves freely, without judgment or inhibition.
The report and toolkit includes:
- An update on the Relaxed concept worldwide, its origin and its geographical spread;
- A selection of transferable practices;
- Recommendations for its development in France.

About Ciné-ma différence
Ciné-ma différence was founded in 2005 in order to facilitate access to film and live shows for people with divergent behaviour due to disability. To do so, inclusive cinema screenings were designed, which were in fact Relaxed shows in all but name.
By 2020, Ciné-ma difference had grown and expanding their work to live entertainment, and now present inclusive adapted screenings and events in over 70 towns in France, as well as offer training and support to cultural organisations, local authorities and charities who wish to improve their access schemes and create a Relaxed offer.
